Kaoru leans in close and talks quieter, not quite whispering but raising a hand to block their faces from the direction of the door.

He says “lucky lucky” as seriously as the rest, not feeling very lucky and fully aware Ellie probably has no one. Feels bad, but he wants to lay the cards out for her: he can't be hopeless, as nice as it would be to buy in that they’re all dead. He wishes he could just kick back and enjoy purgatory, but he has somewhere to be, and being apart from that’s feels like there’s a ticking in the back of his head any time he thinks about it.
