Sin/Without (1990)

Tatsuko Onizuka

Out of all the bad days Tatsuko has had in her life (of which there are many, as there are countless things that can get her in a Mood), this has got to be one of the worst. Sure, she may not like having been thrown in some weird prison or having people explore her brain, but she can live with it. Now, however, her crime has been deemed unforgivable, the restraints she was already not fond of have tightened, and she is being plagued by angry, admonishing voices. Not fun.

This had initially set her on a warpath, nearly tearing apart the prison in search of the wardens to give them a piece of her mind. However, no matter where or how hard she looked, she could find no trace of them. This did nothing to soothe Tatsuko's fury; on the contrary, it had incensed her even more, leading her to angrily stomp and mope around the prison until she reached the hall.

She flops facedown on one of the couches, taking up the entire seat, before groaning in frustration. This sucks.

Emmy | Akemi

Akemi had decided to try the Hall, for a change of scenery in this dull place, and had been sitting with an entirely boring book when Tatsuko stormed in. Akemi had noticed her destructive tendencies from a distance, even hearing vague rumors about a kitchen fire? It did smell smokey in there, more than usual, several days ago.

She had the sense this was going to be an irritating interaction. But she had been somewhat wrong about Kaoru of all people, so who knows.

"Have you run out of things worth breaking already?"

Tatsuko Onizuka

Honestly, Tatsuko hadn't even noticed Akemi when she came into the room, too preoccupied with her own upset that it made her unaware of her own surroundings. Upon hearing the other's voice, she turns her head to face her, not moving from her position on the couch.

"Hey, what kinda person d'you think I am? I don't just break things for fun all the time." All the time being the key words, implying that she does do that some of the time. "It's not my fault this prison's boring as hell and there's nothing to do! The wardens should get, like, an arcade in here. Or like a rec room. You think they have a pool table in one of those rooms we're not allowed in? I bet they fucking do, and they're just keeping it from us. Assholes."

"B'sides, breaking shit is no fun if you can just do it whenever you want. Why would I destroy something when no one's here to see it?"

Emmy | Akemi

"I assume you're the kind of person to throw every book off of a bookshelf and neglect to put any back." She says flatly. "You and I are in agreement at least as far as the useless wardens are concerned. They have no reason to provide us entertainment, because they themselves are far more interested in watching us suffer. I'm quite sure they're getting quite the entertaining show seeing all of us contend with these voices and half of us struggle to make use of our arms."

She raises an eyebrow. Ah, she prefers an audience. That tracks.

"Perhaps you would have a better chance of building an entertaining game for yourself. I doubt the wardens are very interested in providing us with any further enrichment than the bare minimum."

Tatsuko Onizuka

"Oh yeah, I did do that. Totally forgot about that." She shrugs, not seeming very remorseful. It wasn't the most fun of activities, so it's unlikely she'll be repeating it soon. Unless she gets bored. "Man, how long ago was that? Hard to tell the time in here."

"Well, I'm fucking suffering here! Assholes think they have the damn right to judge me, then just disappear after? Who put them in charge? They're lucky I can't use my arms like normal!" She struggles around in her straightjacket to prove her point. "Soon as I find them. I'll show them what I think of their fucking rules." It's less about the audience and more about the principle of breaking rules. It's no fun to break rules when no one's there to enforce them and there's no authority to defy… or whatever that's supposed to mean.

"Uh… how am I supposed to do that?" It's hard to make games when your only hobbies are 'cause trouble' and 'set things on fire'.

Emmy | Akemi

"As far as I know, that was when we first arrived here."

She wouldn't mention that she and Vincent had since re-organized those books, lest it tempt her to undo their hard work.

"I'm fairly certain that's the point. These sadistic idiots, or at least the sadistic bastard they work for, would rather watch us squirm and suffer than provide humane treatment. And the wardens themselves are utterly complicit in our torture."

Akemi shrugged.

"I'm hardly an expert on 'fun.' Find something particularly satisfying to kick around and compete with the other pent-up inmates to see who can kick it the furthest, for all I care. So long as the rest of us prisoners are spared from being lit on fire or otherwise maimed by it."

Notably does not particularly care if a warden were to be hurt at some point by whatever she came up with.
